In spring and summer when the hemisphere is closer to the sun, it creates a sensation of closeness to the sun, previous to set, you can riskfree watch the orange sphere as it emulates sinking in the water. the breeze freshens the long waterfront, any point is good one to enjoy it.

Fresh Fish every day

From early in the morning till late noon, you can purchase fresh fish at the small fish market by "La ría". weather you want sea bass, guachinango or mero, large fish or small ones, be sure that all the fish are fresh.
When you buy it, the fishermen gives you the fish without beng cleaned. on the back counters of the market many people will perform the service of removing the scales and guts for whatever tip you might want to give.
I recently went with a friend to buy some, and for cleaning 8 medium fishes we gave the old man the equivalent to two american dollars.
The prices are fair. That afternoon we enjoyed fried fish for about 2 and half american dollars each.
Each fish weighted about a kilo.

Ciudad del Carmen

A black squirrel is fed by a shoeshine boy just in front of the colonial arquitecture cathedral in Ciudad del Carmen, an island south from Campeche city. People go by in a warm ambiance created by the climate and the structure of the parks and Cathedral.
Here traditional buildings mix with the view of modern arquitecture, Ciudad del Carmen is a city and a port. The view when crossing the bridges that connect the island with firm land, is a landscape and seascape worth living.
Ciudad del Carmen is two and a half hours from Campeche, and has become and important oil business economy for our state.
Between Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen, many tourist developments are taking place, Campeche Playa is one of the most important projects that now is being built. Campeche playa is about 30-45 minutes from Ciudad del Carmen. Soon I will have more news about this huge project that includes a Marina, and all the services a Grand Resort can offer.

IS THE WATERFRONT THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD?

During 2009, several parts of the walking pier, waterfront where enhanced and about a mile was added to it.

From the souther part several blocks where added, enhancing the land and waterscape and waking spaces to it.
Even the restaurants decided to enhance their places and so now there is a seafood restaurant where you can enjoy the view and good food.

This time I went to visit the waterfront, or walking pier, with the idea of measuring it, the walking pier is now 4.7 miles or 7.6 kms aproximately. Is Campeche's waterfront pier now the largest in the world? To be honest I haven't been able to confirm this, However I found out that the Government is planning on keep building and enlarging it.

On the northern part of the waterfront, the enhancements end with the famous "Palapas" which are several seafood restaurants gathered together, and that have become a must visit when you are in Campeche.
On the beach, several small huts called "palapas" were built to give the fishermen a place to convey after fishing.

About half a mile an "abarcadero" a small pier was built, this was done with two things in mind, to have a place to walk and anjoy the view, symbolizing a port.

On the pier you can anjoy the view. On the seaside there are this sculpture that represent boats and give shadow from the sun when needed. on the shoreside many fisherman dock their boats.

So in other words, Campeche's land and seascapes have been enhanced.

While "Novia del Mar" keeps waiting for her sailor to come back. Campeches is growing for better. Around October 2009 the Convention Center was re-inaugurated.
To the original building was added a bigger one, now Campeche can have International, as well as National, conventions and exhibitions of importance

Influenza in Campeche or Yucatan

Hi friends,

there has been a lot of commotion over this influenza threat however I have benn monitoring all news and this is what has happened so far.

In Campeche there has been no confirmed cases, one 50 years old woman was admitted into a government hospital and samples were sent to Mexico City for analysis. So far has not been confirmed.
In Yucatan there were two cases that later on were confirmed to be normal human flue.

According to all news I have read, there are no cases confirmed. However the Health Department advices to take few preventive measures.

Many of the public events that were to be held have been canceled.

Campechean Governor Jorge Carlos Hurtado Valdez told the people to have their normal lives and just keep in mind the suggested preventive measures. He said that so far it has not come necessary to close restaurants.

Yucatan

Hi friends,
As you can see in the tittle, we have no expanded our blog to Yucatan state, which is our neighbor. Merida is the capital city, with close to 1 million inhabitants and about 2 million in all the state. Due to its location, Merida has become the economic heart of the Peninsula, Progreso Port which is 20 minutes from the city serves as the spot where supplies and merchandise arrive to, or are sent from, the peninsula. Yucatan's highest pride is Chichenitza, which was named one of the 7 modern wonders of the world. There are so many things to see and visit, that we thought it would be a great idea to introduce our neighbor state to you.

Merida is about 2-2 1/2 hour drive from Campeche. Buses leave every half hour all day long, so it is convenient. You can always go and spend a day or so to Merida.

Coben, handcrafts.

Outside Campeche, on the road that goas to Yucatan and Can cun, maybe fifteen minutes from the city, is a small town that is famous for its handcrafts stores. San Francisco Koben, known as Koven only, has many stores by the highway where you can stop and buy hammocks, typical clothings, hats, bags,and many things; also "eatable handcrafts", now that sounds funny, just made it up, what I mean, is you can buy typical sweets, bread and conservatives like fruit in syrup. And of course you should get better deals than in the city.

2009 Campechean Carnival

Hello friends, the first month of 2009 is almost gone, and this means that "Carnaval" is around the corner (7-24th of February). A time for "fiesta" (party). The "Carnaval" is a tradition in Mexico and other places around the world. Mardi Gras, New Orleans, Brazil, and so many places. But according to Christine DelSol, a former chronicle travel editor, I quote: "Mexico's only walled city, once beset by pirates, hosts the country's oldest Carnival celebration." Of course Campeche celebrates it big; many events will be held on the days previous to the parades. The elections of the Carnival Queen, the carnival's children's queen and king, among others. Here is the schedule:

February 7th, (Saturday)
The “Pre-carnival” dance, to be held in the “Circo Teatro Renacimiento (Theater Circus Renaissance)

February 8th (Sunday)
Children's Folk Dancing contest

February 11th (Wednesday)
Traditional Female dancing (only women go) to be held in the Alambra Convention Center.

February 12th (Thursday)
The symbolic Bad mood Pirate’s and his Rooster of Joy, funeral and burning.

February 14th (Saturday)
Crowning of the Queen and King of the University of Campeche, the following day the crowning of the ones from the Campechean Institute, both events to be held at the acoustic shell in Barrio de San Roman. Also, the mournful march and burning of Juan Carnaval.

February 16th (Monday)
With the crowning of the Queen and King of people with different capacities (handicapped) the events at the Ah Kim Pech forum begin + Concert with Yahir, popular singer

"Posadas" A tradition.

December is a month of celebration, and as you know Campecheans are famous for their celebrations all year long. Something that caught my attention this month was the “posadas” done in the churches. “Posada” means inn, however in our sense we use it as “asking for shelter” (“Pedir posada”) so this festivity ritual recalls somehow the event when Joseph and Maria were asking for shelter so Jesus could be born. In the story of the song, they go to several places where they are rejected until finally they are accepted. Parts of the song are sung by the people outside and other parts are sung by people inside, at the end of it, the doors are opened and all sing together the welcome of them. Here is a small part of the song. Notice that someone dressed like Joseph, a girl like Maria, and a couple of angels too.

Bazar de Artesanias (Handcrafts' Mall)

The Park of San Francisco

With the renewal of San Francisco Church, the park was also renewed. The old park has seized to exist, and the new one is now a place that invites you to stay and feel calmness. The green areas were stretched and the whole park was redesigned. An area for kids to play was added.

Tomorrow, Friday 28th, Andrea Vocelli will perform in the main plaza, yesterday an army of men were working fast and hard to finish the scenario where this great singer will perform, of course you are so invited, courtesy of the Campeche government, the entrance fee is free.

A bigger Convention Center

Campeche is coming of age and to show for it, the Convention Center is growing. A new building is being built so it can receive more expositors and the promise that we will see in the months to come more shows. Just two days ago, we had the state competition for the best Campechean Handcraft Price, where the best handcrafters show their work. Hand made hats, “huipiles”, hammocks, and other things were shown.

The invited state this time was Oaxaca, several handcrafters displayed their products on the esplanade of the Acoustic Shell in Barrio de San Roman.

The renewed Church of San Francisco

Few weeks ago, the renewal of the Iglesia de San Francisco (Church of San Francisco) was finished. all details were remodeled, and it looks like when originally finished in red brick color. It is said that the first mass held in firm land was done here. And it is a belief that this was the first church to be constructed in the continent. La feria de San Roman (Saint Roman's Celebration)

Mexico is famous for its different annual fairs all over the country. Campeche is not the exception.
During September and part of October the most important "Ferias" fairs are held near downtown. First the biggest and most important, the celebration of the Black Christ "Our Lord of San Roman". Due to lack of space the fair is set on two big lots in the Kimpech area. Where the Carnival meets with a huge market where one can buy food, clothes, gadgets, etc. The carnival has all sorts of mechanichal rides to be enjoyed. During this season a lot of concerts, mostly with free entrance are held too. A good season to have a good time. So we hope to see you sometime in the future having fun at this fair.

Barrio de Guadalupe

Hi friends, I went for a walk in the Barrio de Guadalupe, (Virgin Guadalupe's Neighborhood). A quiet sector of the city. The church is the second older one dedicated to the Virgin Guadalupe, this church was built after the one in the Valley of Tepeyac. The park or "plazuela" by the church keeps that colonial atmmosphere, surrounded by old constructions, gives a sense of quietness and peace to whomever goes there to sit. Wether is for lunch or to "make out" it is a nice place to visit for a while. The church and "plazuela" is about 10-15 minutes walk from the main plaza or Cathedral.

It is a funny thing when one comes to think about the Colony soldiers who guarded the forts when they needed to go to the restroom. It would have been dangerous to leave the post and go all the way into the rooms downstairs. Well I discovered a rest-room on the roof where the guarding posts were. A GREAT VIEW

Better than a day at the park, a walk through the San Jose hill is quite a sight. Starting at the gates of San Jose's Fort, enjoying the view from the outside spot where the canyons are; you can be there to have lunch while sitting on a bench to watch the ocean and the landscape. From el Mirador about half a mile from the fort, you can have a look at the city of Campeche. In the middle, you can appreciate the cathedral and have the sensation of a small city below you.
Like a hidden place inside the Mayan jungle.

A Romantic Legend

Hi again,

People tell this tale or say legend of this girl who fell in love with a sailor or fisherman. One day he went away on a trip, the girl waited for him, and waited and waited.
He never returned. Nobody knows if the girl turn to stone, but legend says she is still waiting for that sailor to come back.
So day and night she stares into the ocean with the hope to see his ship arrive home.
The statue is known as the Ocean's bride or Bride of the sea.

Puerta de Tierran (Land Gate)

Hi friends,

One can sense old days when the fortress surrounding Campeche city was guarded by Spaniard soldiers watching from above. Land Gate walls connect San Francisco's Bastion with San Juan's bastion. A walk above the wall can gives you a sensation of wondering how the fights between pirates, buccaneers and Spaniards were. From different points you can see down town's streets all the way to the Sea Gate's side. Different views make the visit to the Land Gate very interesting.
Inside San Franciso's bastion there is a museum that shows some of the pirates' history.

Old canyons still are mute witnesses that have been there for centuries.

Another place worth visiting.

From the canyons point of view

A perfect spot to see all what Campeche is. How about planning to spend lunch time watching the ocean and the magnificent view from this spot outside "El fuerte de San Miguel" while you eat your favorite sandwich; or just enjoy the view?

One wonders how old are the canyons that one time fought the pirates like Morgan and others.

After enjoying this view, you can walk to the "El mirador" a point to view the city. It is only 3 or 4 minutes from the fort. There you can enjoy a better view of the city.

About Internet Service in Campeche

Hi Friends, this is to reply to Janet Brown's request. There are two main Internet providers in Campeche, one is from a Cable company they offer up to 1.5 Mbps download and 145 Kbps upload and the other is with our main telephone company, which offers broad-band up to 2.0 Mbps download and 640 Kbps upload. Also there are a lot of public Internet shops. Each offering different services.
Band availability will depend on how busy are the computers at any given time.

When Jaime my brother comes to Campeche, he gets wireless service from the hotels. I am sure that the main hotels offer this service. The services run from 30 to less than 100 usd, depending on the service you need. However if you want to use Cable Internet, you will have to also contract for at least their basic cable tv plan, and for the telephone company's service, you must have a telephone line in service provided by the same company.

CAMPECHE'S WATERFRONT OR WALKING PIER

Hi friends,

A walk through the waterfront or pier (Malecón) is always a nice thing to do.
You can feel the breeze and peacefulness. Campeche's waterfront has a walking road and a jogging road.

Every half a mile or so, there is a monument or statue that tells something about Campeche.

A perfect spot to watch the sunset.
It is customary here to gather at evenings with friends or family, specially on weekends, when it is visited by hundreds of people.
One of the largest waterfronts in Mexico with an extension of two and a half miles, approx.

Four of the main hotels are located in the Malecón Boulevard, and Many good restaurants, also.

San Jose's Bastion

Just came back from visiting one of the large bastions, that are on the hills that surround Campeche, San Jose’s bastion, and I tell you, it is a wondrous site to see. From there you can see all the city and one can wonder how would all those pirate ships and merchant ships would look from there. The ocean looks so calm, and there is a sensation of calmness all around. So don’t forget to visit these bastions when you visit Campeche.

Botanical Garden

Hi friends,

Happy to say that the Botanical Garden "Xmuch Haltun" has been reopened. It is located inside the Santiago bastion. The garden shows a wide variety of plants that grow in Campeche and other places on Earth.

While visiting, a sense of peacefulness is felt inside. Palm trees, and small plants combine to give the sensation of being in an oasis.

The archaic wall of the bastion give an interesting contrast to he sight in there. There is also a desk for tourist information.

Walking through the city, I was able to see the effort that the city is doing to keep the Heritage at is best. Many colonial houses are been remodeled to keep its looks. So we can enjoy always the flavor of old colonial sites like when they were new.

Free shows on weekends

Every Saturday and Sunday evenings, the San Francisco, Santa Ana, Main Plaza and San Roman parks, have shows in a wide variety. From singers to dancers to comedians, the parks are the scenario for people to go and enjoy. Needless to say, they are free of cost.

The Mastiffs' Bridge

History says, that General Don Francisco de Paula y Toro, order this small bridge to connect the “Alameda” with the Barrio de Santa Ana, due to a water outflow.

When Don Francisco’s wife, Doña Mercedez, went to the construction site when it was almost finished. She asked the construction foreman, “Don Pepe,would you be kind enough to tell me, what are the finishing pillars for? He replied, “I have instructions from the General to place four artistic oil lamps, which already have been order in Mexico city, they must be on their way here as we speak, they will represent the inextinguishable fire of science, art, thought and love.”

After hearing this, she remained silent. Few days later she visited the site again, this time se suggested the foreman: “Why don’t you place statues of Anibal and Alejandro, instead?” He then replied: “Good idea, after all, these were great generals, and it will be in accordance to the General’s profession”. Then Doña Mercedez said: “I´m not talking about them, I´m talking about my mastiffs”.

To cut the story short, after she named him a great sculptor, and not just a mason, he agreed. And so the bridge was built. This is where Doña Mercedez used to walk her dogs.

A Small Museum

There are big museums in the world. But this one is small, the smallest I have seen. I discovered it some months ago, but it was closed for remodeling. Recently reopened, shows the merits of a very decorated Generals in Mexican Army in the past century, Jose del Carmen Ortiz A. It was a novelty for me to see the story of how an army soldier's career evolves. Medals, documents and arms collection fill this 2 room little museum, worth seeing.

Gardening in Campeche

One great thing that Campeche has is its enriched soil, and for those who love plants this is good news. As I was waking in one of the barrios, I saw this beautiful garden surrounding a house that evokes a place to spend weekends.

Plants and flowers in one colorful display are an invitation to sit in a rocking chair or lay down on a hammock, to relax with a glass of lemonade and your favorite book. A warm heaven to enjoy.

Few days ago I met Eva, she is from Germany. Eva first came to Campeche on the spring of 2001, she found out that Campeche is a good place for her in order to work with people. Eva wants to help people through her work, she brings spiritual therapy for those who seek a more rich and satisfying life. She chose Campeche for its peaceful ambiance; for her, one of the peaks of the day is to walk her three little dogs around the main park. She loves the breeze and the sense of clean air.
But the best thing is that she doesn't have to cope with the very cold weather in Germany.

Hi friends,
I want to share with you the sensation when you walk by the old fortifiation that surrounded the city.
When I see the old remaining of the Campechean fort, I can only wonder
how things were then. Pirates attacking the villages, Spaniard soldiers defending them. And so many legends and stories get mixed with it's history, that one can only be amazed by them. On weekend's evenings you can see the Pirates show at the Land Gate (Puerta de Tierra).

An unusual singer

Campeche is famous for it's free shows which are performed in different places around the city all year long.
One evening as I was walking by Santa Ana park, I saw this particular and strange performer, singing songs and making jokes, the masked singer, also known as the singing wrestler. This shows make Saturday and Sunday's evenings different from other places.

One day at Champoton

Hello friends, just got back from Champoton a town that is about an hour by bus from Campeche, nice place to spend a day if you like to walk and quietness, this are some of the things I saw.

Mothers' park, (Parque de las madres) Located in front of the Church of the Merciful (Iglesia de lasMercedes) is dedicated to motherhood.

Church of the Merciful (Iglesia de las Mercedes) Built by the Franciscans, probably during the 17thcentury.

The plaza principal combines a modern structure with the colonial architecture that surrounds it.

About a 20 minutes walk from the Church (Iglesia de las Mercedez) I found a small pyramid, nobody knows much about it. But it gives a spacial feeling to climb it and look on one side the town, and on the other the vast jungle.

Champoton is famous for its sea food restaurants, but that... you can discover it, when you visit this nice town.

A day at Santa Ana park

It is noon, weather is very fair, 32° C (90° F), Quietness is around, a nice moment to take time to read, enjoy a sunny day, or simply let the calmness relax you. A little breeze makes it even more enjoyable spending time at Santa Ana Park. Maybe visit the Church in front of the park. However if you are sun sensitive, don't forget your UV protection lotion and glasses. It is very soothing to spend some time in the quietness of Campeche's parks.
The Santa Ana Park was remodeled two years ago, standing in front of the Church of Santa Ana, was dedicated to the memory of the 7 "Hero Kids" who died defending the Castle of Chapultepec, Mexico City, during the war of North-American Intervention, on 1847.

Hi folks, I wanted to tell you about this past days in Campeche. The hot weather has started earlier than expected. Last year we celebrated the parades, carnival in february, with a sweater, this year light clothes. The average temperatures this month have fluctuated between 68°F, 20°C at night, and 92°F, 33°C. Some days went up to 36°C, 99°F. Nice weather this time of year. We have had a couple of rains too.

Something for retired ladies

When you retire sometimes you wonder, what things are there to do? Well, for those ladies who like to knit, there are a few shops in Campeche where you can learn how to weave in a neat invention created by mexicans. Lets call it the "mini weaver", You can take lessons at this shops at different schedules. You can create sweaters, scarfs, etc.

What Saul covers in the previous post may seem to suggest that houses in Campeche City are expensive. One must keep in mind that heritage buildings/homes in the historic downtown district have appreciated enormously since 1999/2000 when Campeche City's historic downtown was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There has been quite a bit of investment in the downtown core since and many properties have been sold to investors speculating on a tourism boom in the future. Many of old homes in the downtown district have great potential to become B&B's, Inns, boutique hotels (like Francis Drake, for example), restaurants and retail stores. One may envision a time in the not too distant (neither too close) future when there will be thousands of visitors in Campeche City at one time and consequently more establishments to serve them. For the time being though, many of these homes are inhabited by their original owners and, by the way, many would need a lot of work to bring them up to modern standards. Renovating or refurbishing heritage homes may not be an easy or cheap endeavour because there are many restrictions as to what can be architecturally done to the structures in keeping with their heritage nature.

As for homes that are not in Campeche City's Historic Downtown, there are a variety of options although the supply at any one time is quite limited still. On the one hand you have what promises to be a magnificent resort community at the Campeche Pla ya Marina Golf & Spa Resort where residents and visitors supposedly will be able to enjoy golf, sailing, lounging on the beach, walking and birding on the grounds, helping baby turtles get to sea (in season), dining in restaurants in the resort, etc. Of course, being a high-end resort (the golf course will be a Jack Nicklaus signature course). Naturally, being a high-end resort prices for condominiums here will be high end. The resort (under construction is located about 45 to 60 minutes south of Campeche City.

In addition, there are homes, of course, that are built for locals. These vary from low income housing designed to serve the working class and sometimes subsidized by the government and costing in the neighbourhood of $18,000 or so to middle class subdivisions where homes may cost up to $150,000 or so. Finally there are the monster homes custom built by the local elites. These massive properties may cost up to a few million dollars once finished.

So there you have it. If you're in the market for a property in Campeche state (there are small towns where property values are quite low (of course don't expect any tourist services or people who can speak English) it depends on what you are looking for, how much you can afford and how able you are to navigate the local culture and customs. One thing to keep in mind. Please do not leave your brains at home. If you are going to purchase a property in Campeche (or Mexico for that matter) get the right advice. Try to find an independent attorney to review any legal documents be it the fideicomiso (bank trust through which foreign nationals can buy property near Mexican coasts), the purchase and sale agreement or any other contract. In Mexico real estate deals involve a notary public, which is a highly respected occupation, but it may be advisable to also engage a good lawyer to look after your interests. The Canadian, American or UK Chambers of Commerce in Mexico city may be able to refer you to reputable firms. The other key thing to remember is to try and obtain title insurance for your property. Stewart Title (of the US) has several offices in Mexico and offer insurance and escrow services.

It is like a Hallowing tradition, only held here in Campeche, it's called out the "The branches going out" or "The branches night out", kids from all over the city dress a branch with balloons and other stuff. They fill plastic bottles with sand or small pebbles, so they can use them as percution instruments. When the night falls, they go out house to house singing a song that tells about the arrival of the branch from cuba, and this branch brings a bunch of grapes for the Child, take of your hat for here lives a general, how beautiful is the Virgin more than all flowers. Whe the chant is over, the children wait for treats from the people in the house. To finish they sing something like: Now the branch is going, and goes very greatful, because it was very welcome.
Isn't this a cute tradition that goes on from December 1st till the 19th, when the "Posadas" (Parties were the remembrance of Jesus birth are held) begin.

“World Bread Day” in Campeche

The world celebrated the “World Bread Day”, and so Campeche did. In the usual campechean way people gathered at the “Concha Acustica” Park were many stands showed their handcrafted bread made in Campeche, Pomuch, Exelchakan, and other towns from the state. Every night you could enjoy the musical shows, like “Mariachi” a typical Mexican band, or “salsa” music very popular in tropical cities. But the best part was to taste and enjoy one of the best hands made bread in the world.

Hello friends,

Campeche is a nice place to live due to the low cost of life, for example you can rent a house for as low as 250.00 usd. If you like to have a maid to help you, you can have her for as low as 50 usd per week. If you need to take a cab it will cost you 2.5 usd from downtown to any point of the city. My expierence is that a couple can live nicely and comfortably starting at six or seven hundred usd a month. The average wage a doctor asks for consultation is thirty usd. Even for a long vacation you can rent a furnished apartement starting at 300 to 400 usd. And groceries are lower in price compared to United States, Canada or Europe.

Campeche a big movie set in November

A lot of fuss has been going on here in Campeche for the past few days, due to the filming of the movie "The Argentinean", our city was chosen by Steven Soderbergh (Director), Oscar winner Benisio del Toro, will play the main roll. Even though some business had to close for the filming of some scenes downtown, everybody is excited to know that Campeche is once again in the eyes of the world.

Retiring to Campeche, Mexico is "very good news"!

Good news for Mexico, it has been named the number one country of choice for retirement. And this excites me, of course, I´m mexican; and twice the excitement, for Campeche is in the top ten places scouted in Mexico by Dan Prescher and Suzan Haskins, as mentioned in the article by Laura Sheridan, International Living: The World’s Top Retirement Havens in 2007 http://www.globalaging.org/elderrights/world/2007/havens.htm.

And Campeche would be our choice, above all, for the following reasons: It is the state with the lowest crime level in Mexico. The cost of living is one of the lowest. It’s geographical location puts you relatively near Can-cun, Merida, Mayan Riviera, and all the sites and beaches around. And the best it has everything anyone would need to have a wonderful and comfortable living.

Legend of "La Cueva del Toro"

Bull’s Cave Legend

Campeche is very rich with folks’ legends, stories of haunted treasures, ghosts and witches; this, are part of the local culture, such as the one of the corner of the Bull’s Cave, (Cueva del Toro). The legend says that a bad witch had the power to turn into a raging bull by night, terrorizing the people of Barrio de San Roman with heavy “moo” noises; some even say that he kidnapped women. One time the people got tired of this witch and gathering together they went to the cave which they destroyed with the “Bull” inside. And so, the cave no longer exists, and the witch, either. And so, only remains the story of something that nobody know if it really happened.

Another version of this legend tells that ferocious noises of an animal can be heard. People say that inside the cave lived a bull that used to take on the appearance of a gallant gentleman in the night and lured beautiful unsuspecting youths into his cave never to return. One night the people of the neighborhood waited for this “Bull man” to come out of his cave. They fought with him and took out his heart which was the fruit of a mammee tree. Then a torrential thunderstorm flooded his cave. It is said that people can still hear ferocious moanings from time to time.

Campeche, a Colonial city where legends and stories become alive in the imagination of those who visit it.

Handcrafted sweet rolls

Early, very early, even before dawn, brick ovens are lighted with wood. Bakers start preparing bread and rolls by hand. Specially in a Bakery were tradition is it´s main name, Bakery "El Laurel", were no machinery exists, everything is made by hand. Sweet rolls, french rolls, cookies, toast, and best of all the "hojaldra" wich is stuffed with a special cheese "daisy" and ham. Nowhere in the world can you find such delicious, and original bread and rolls, like in Campeche. It has probably one of the best in the world. The "Pichon" roll, wich is stuffed with ham, cheese, and jalapeno hot pepper.
Great for a quick lunch. The "tuti hojaldrado" is a roll like hamburguer, dressed with hojaldra and stuffed with cream cheese. So remember to get some sweet, and sweet&sour rolls, on your next trip to the best state in Mexico, Campeche.

Campechean Bingo, a fun evening

Hello again friends, Weekend nights are filled with traditional activities, like the Campechean Bingo, which is held around the main plaza park every Friday and Saturday. Basically is the same as Bingo, only, instead of numbers, Campechean Bingo is a set of different pictures like a barrel, a shrimp, a deer, a siren, etc. During the different churches’ celebrations Bingo is always a participant of the festivities; you can always find two or three Bingo stands besides the church. The game is played waging whatever the deal is on the table, for example, five pesos each. The winner takes all the money gathered in each game. Anyone can play as many cards as he or she can handle. It’s a fun and relaxing way to spend a weekend evening.

THE LEGENDS OF THE BLACK CHRIST “THE LORD OF SAN ROMAN”
Hi friends! This time I take the opportunity to tell you about the Christ of San Roman, since September is the time when Campecheans celebrate the most significant carnival for them.
The Image became famous in Italy, known as the Christ of the Venom, legend tells that it was originally made with white wood. An Atheist farmer was bitten by a very poisonous viper and miraculously the Christ absorbed the venom turning into a black color.
Another legend tell that the ship that was bringing the Christ to Campeche burned and got the color of charcoal, without changing the color of the cross.
The third and most popular story is that Cano de Coca acquired the Image at Civita Vecchia, Italy, wich was shipped arriving to Veracruz port. Cano de Coca asked a ship captain to take him and the image to Campeche, but being an atheist he denied the service. Later on, he found another vessel with a very religious Spaniard who agreed to take both, man and image. The captain order that the image had to be chained with the most care so it wouldn’t be harmed. During the trip a terrible storm hit, and according to the crew, “a man who they did not know, took control of the ship and save everybody”.

What ever might be the truth, the interest thing is that the black Christ is a unique piece of art worth admiring.

Living "La Colonia"

Hi friends, As you might know I recently, well almost a year, moved to Campeche, and I have been discovering the beauty and peacefullness of Campeche, wich now I will be sharing with you as I come to visit places and sites in this, one of the most beautiful states in Mexico, Campeche. This time, let me tell you about the oldest park in town. The "Alameda" wich means place with a lot of poplar trees.
On the 15th of february, 1830, Francisco de Paula Toro, built the first park in Campeche,
and still the longest one, wich goes for two blocks, starting in front of the "Puerta de
Tierra" the fortification´s main door to land; and ends with the "bridge of dogs" wich was
built so Mrs. Mercedes Lopez de Santa Anna de Paula Toro, could walk by with her dogs.
The statue is dedicated to Benito Juarez, a 19th century president. Today this park is a place were people gather to take a brake at noon or for sweathearts to meet.

After Dean - back to the routines (but not everyone)

Well, the good news is that Dean spared most of Campeche from sever damage and most of all from loss of life. It really was more of a big storm than a severe hurricane. However, the southern part of the state did suffer damages and according to authorities the agricultural sector was hit hard, particularly corn crops. The state government is seeking federal aid for the south (Municipio del Carmen) by asking for a natural disaster designation.

Hurricane "Dean" is gone

Campeche is back to normal, hurricane Dean is long gone. The great thing about this was that all campecheans organized well enough that nobody was killed or seriously injured. Champoton and the island of Ciudad del Carmen were the ones who suffered the most in our state.
Despite the heavy rain and winds of 80 to 100 miles per hour, the damages were minimum, compared to was expected. We are glad that our government responded promptly: Electricity was restablished in Campeche city in less than 24 hours; droped trees and garbage, mostly branches and leaves were removed in about the same amount of time. So now the weather is back to nice, not so hot, today was sunny with a mild rain in the afternoon.

Campeche gets ready for Dean

Everyone in Campeche is battin' down the hatches waiting for Dean. Monday was a normal day for the most part, but Tuesday Aug 20th everyone will stay put. Schools and businesses will stay closed and parts of the state will be practically deserted, mostly in the south near and around Ciudad del Carmen. Dean is expected to hit the coast of Quintana Road near and around Chetumal. If the storm does not weaken and continues straight it will hit southern Campeche hard. We hope it will not be with the strength of a category 5 or even 4.

Campeche in the calm and heat of Summer

Not much to report during these months of summer. Not much is happening in Campeche these days (other than daily Campechean life). However, the Feria del Carmen has begun and it runs until the end of the month in Carmen county (Municipio del Carmen). The one very interesting event is the Virgen del Carmen's boat ride on the sea and lake of Ciudad del Carmen. On the 22th of july, the Virgin of Carmen is taken for a boat ride by sea. Hundreds of boats join the procession as part of the Feria del Carmen's celebrations. In other news, it looks like the large resort south of Champoton is really under construction now. The first phase should be noticeable in the next several months. The resort may bring more tourists to the region sometime in 2008 or 2009.

Hola Campeche Amigos, I have been quite busy with Canadian affairs lately and my brother, who lives in Campeche, was also away on business in another Mexican state. He's back home now, so we will resume our blogging and will have more news and commentary soon. I start with a brief comment on the season's weather. Late Spring and summer can be very hot in Campeche. It is not uncommon to experience 100 to a 120 degree weather in Campeche between may and august (in celsius we are talking of temperatures around the 40 degree mark). So be aware if you are not used to the heat. Midday, betwen 1 and 4 pm is the hottest, so you may want to stay close to a pool, a beach or an air conditioned room then. Also, summer is rainy season and late summer/fall is storm season. As for hurricanes, Campeche does get big storms sometimes, but rarely gets hit head on by a hurricane. This is because hurricanes form in the Caribbean on the Mayan Riviera side and gather strength as they pick up moisture from the Atlantic and into the Gulf of Mexico. If you look at hurricane trajectories they will either hit the Mayan Riviera directly or continue on toward the Gulf and the US. They pose more of a danger to the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Flamingo Coast) than to Campeche. Of course the state will get severe raining in the event of a hurricane in the peninsula, but hurricanes on a path towards the Gulf of Mexico will rarely turn around and it Campeche head on (although it has happened).

Will the Global Climate Change affect Campeche?

By now most leaders in the industrialized world have admitted that Global Climate Change is a reality, that the scientific evidence is real and that they must do something about it (or appear to be doing something about it) or risk political backlash from their constituents. Australia and Canada have banned incandescent bulbs (perhaps not immediately, but by 2012, Canadians will no longer use incandescent light bulbs). While these are good baby steps, most scientists and environmentalists are calling for more decisive action. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an international group of leading environmental scientists, is calling for immediate measures in the short term to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions. According to the recommendations, green house gas emmissions must begin to decline by 2015 to avoid the most dramatic and destructive effects of climate change.

So what does this have to do with Campeche? Everything. Most people in Campeche state live right next to the coast. If climate change and global warming are not stopped and Al-Gore-like dire-predictions come to pass, Campeche's current coast will dissappear under water in a few decades. I personally think this scenario is exaggerated, but that's because the idea of all of this happening is so awful, that I sort of go, Nah, it won't happen (although in Canada no one can deny that the Arctic Circle has been shrinking at a fast rate in the last few decades). I think we must focus on the positive and on what each of us as individuals can begin to do today to help reduce gas emmissions (like switching to energy efficient light bulbs and cars). Campeche developers, for example, could look into alternative energy sources for their developments, mostly Solar energy. Campeche gets a lot of hours of sunshine becuase of its proximity to the Ecuator. Sun rays are the source of energy for solar panels. In addition to solar energy, there is geothermal energy and many great technologies that not only Campeche, but all of Mexico should adopt. Campeche could be the greenest state in all of Mexico. Security in Campeche

Campeche has always been one of the most peaceful states in Mexico with some of the lowest crime rates in the country. Recent events in some parts of the state (mostly around the southern city of Carmen) raise some concerns which we will be mindful off. The recent kidnapping of a prominent local businessman and his subsequent rescue safe and sound give us confidence in state and federal law enforcement in the area but it also gives us pause for obvious reasons.

Lots of political activity in Campeche due to an international summit.

A lot of political activity in Campeche lately. The City of Campeche hosted its first major international summit ever when presidents from Central America, Mexico and Colombia got together in this city to discuss various issues (e.g. regional security, trade and energy). The city became a bit of a fortress with over 3,000 security personnel making sure no bad guys came to disrupt the proceedings. In addition to the heads of state, two of the most powerful and successful Mexican businessmen also participated at the summit (called PPP for Plan Puebla Panama). Francisco Sada and Carlos Slim spent time with the participants to discuss business (Carlos Slim just recently surpassed the oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet, as the second richest man in the world, just behind Bill Gates.

It is not clear at all whether this summit will benefit Campeche (other than the immediate economic impact of hosting such an important event), but it may, who knows? It may attract some investment. The Governor of Campeche made sure the Mexican President, Mr. Calderon learned about the state's need for more investment in infrastructure and it's continuing potential in the area of international tourism.

Walking by 10th street I found a small gallery, dedicated to the memory of all campechean musicans and song writers. As I entered, Sergio Esquivel, who was the first mexican to win the OTI Festival, greeted me along with Jose Luis Amaya and Gustavo Lara Aguirre, song writers too. It was a precious moment to be able to share a chat with them. Only in Campeche, like in small cities, can we find people who are proud of their heritage, and are willing to accept you, a stranger, as a friend.

Campechean traditions

Some days I get amazed by the closeness of the campecheans and how they still keep traditionsthe bring them together. As I was walking through the Barrio of San Jose, I encountered something that caught my attention: outside several houses I saw "altars" built on top of small tables, crucifixes, candles and flowers. Of course, not knowing what´s this was about, I talked to a family. I found out that at the biginning of the Lent, people gather to go visit the houses who put their small altars to chant and pray. They name this act the "Via Crucis" Way of the Cross.

Carnival 2007 is over - but Easter is coming.

The 2007 edition of Campeche City's Carnival (Mardi Gras) is over. Like every year, Campecheans are now recovering from party after party, parrade after parrade, concert after concert. It was a fun Carnival this year with spectacular floats and really beautiful women. The kids parade was also a lot of fun. Families came out en masse to support the little ones.

And so the city and the state residents return to their normal routines, but look forward to the Easter Holidays when they all (it seems that everyone) go to the local and nearby beaches to rest and have fun. I hope to be back in Campeche as soon as possible.

More protection for Campeche's Mangroves (less development?)

On December 21st 2006, the Mexican Congress passed an amendment to the Mexican Wild Life General Act (Ley General de Vida Silvestre). The new provisions make it more difficult to develop projects in or around Mangrove areas all over the country. This means that the mangrove areas in Campeche are now more protected from any construction. There is debate in Mexico as to what the new provisions really mean for tourism and residential tourism in certain areas of Mexico. My opinion (and I am no lawyer) from reading the actual text of the amendment ("Queda prohibida la remoción, relleno, transplante, poda, o cualquier obra o actividad que afecte la integralidad del flujo hidrológico del manglar; del ecosistema y su zona de influencia; de su productividad natural...") is that developers or individuals will not be able to touch mangrove areas (unless it is for scientific purposes to further protect them). This is actually very good. I think it will, firstly, limit the number of develpment projects on the coast of Campeche and secondly, any projects will need to be absolutely eco-friendly and hopefully very creative in their design and use of alternative energy sources (like solar power). One can only hope.

But what really is mangrove? The word mangrove can refer to specific types of vegetation (as seen in the picture) as well as an entire ecosystem where one can find many of these types of plants. Mangrove plants are named after colours (most commonly Red, White and Blue...no just kidding - Red, White and Black) and belong to various families (Combretacae, Arecaceae, Rhizophoraceae and others). Mangrove ecosystems are extremely important for the biodiversity they support. Most of Campeche's magroves are located in the north part of the state in the protected area called los Petenes. However there is a lot of mangrove as well on the coast between Champoton and Sabancuy. With 496,000 acres, Campeche has the most mangrove of any state in Mexico.

Campeche Playa Golf Marina & Spa Resort in Toronto

Last night I attended the first presentation of Spanish developer Grupo Mall in Toronto to promote their massive project in Campeche, the Campeche Playa Golf Marina & Spa Resort (photo- artist's rendition). About 100 people gathered at the prestigious Dominion Club in the heart of Toronto's Financial District to listen to a presentation by Grupo Mall's executives and the consuls of Mexico and Panama (they also introduced their Faros de Panama project).

Among the guests were executives of Tourism businesses in Toronto and the Director and deputy Director for the Mexican Tourism Board. Most of the attendees were rather interested in this new Mexican destination and especially in the resort. Mr Jorge Muñoz, the lead architect of the project, talked about the environmentally friendly design as well as the architectural influences of the project (Spanish colonial architecture, Mayan flavour and tropical surroundings). In a conversation with Julio Noval, the managing director for the Campeche Playa, I learned that there are plans for several presentations in Canada, starting in Toronto and soon spreading to other parts of the country. I am in discussions with his organization to assist in this process. I am happy because this means that more Canadians will be visiting the state in the not too distant future. This is very good because it makes my wife more willing to spend our winters there when we retire.

Campeche's Carnival

Carnival is coming - Campeche's various Carnival Festivals begin on February 3d. The big parade in Campeche City will take place on February 17th. Then on the 19th there's the Algarabia Campechana, a festival that celebrates Campechean culture with specific Campechean characters like the "Aguador," of old.

Back in Canada - Hacienda San Pedro

After a few warm and very busy days in Campeche, I am back in Toronto (minus 6 degrees celsius). I did not have much time for R&R but did see my Mother who is spending the winter in Campeche. And a good winter for her it is since Vancouver and Victoria looked like Toronto and Montréal in early January (climate change?).

My trip was mostly business. Met with some people in the real estate business and some overseas investors looking for opportunities. Also found out more about the Campeche Playa Golf Spa & Marina resort. It looks like they will start a big construction push very soon. Right now work is being done to move the coastal highway to the back of the planned resort. The developers will do a presentation in Toronto, Ontario at the end of January (next week).

I also visited an old Hacienda (pictured in this post) that goes back to the days before the Mexican revolution (1910). It's an huge property with over 750 acres and, in my opinion lots of potential for a golf-tennis-equestrian-residential resort. It's not on the beach, but rather inland about 20 minutes from Campeche City. I hope someone does develop it in the coming years. Campeche could turn into a cultural and golf tourism area withing ten years.

Coming to Visit

I will be in Campeche City this coming weekend (Jan 19-23) on business. - Although my visits to Campeche are never just business - this time I will also take advantage of the trip and visit with my Mother who is there for a few months (she lives in Vancouver).

Hopefully this trip will be very productive. Meeting with investors and various business people about a possible new project in residential tourism. (good timing too - it's snowing in Toronto and Vancouver right now)

Direct flights from Europe?

According to a report this past December in the Campeche newspaper, El Sur, there will be direct flights from Europe (Madrid) to Campeche as early as this February. Well, we'll believe it when we see it. Hope this is true - it would be great. As for North America, well, there are still basically three ways to get to Campeche. Either you fly to Mexico City and connect there to a flight to Campeche City (or Ciudad del Carmen in the South) OR you fly to Merida City and from there you go to Campeche City (have someone pick you up or catch a bus from downtown Merida). A third way is to fly to Ciudad del Carmen from Houston, Texas and from there go to Campeche City or other parts of the state.

VIRGIN of GUADALUPE'S BIRTHDAY

For some days now people from all over the country and specially from Campeche, have been celebrating our Lady Saint Virgin of Guadalupe's birthday wich is today, december the 12th, in the different churches in town. But the most meaningful is the festivity that the people from Barrio de Guadalupe had tonight.
Surrounded by light and many stands selling food and all sorts of things, the Church of Guadalupe was packed with people, hundreds of faithful followers gather, inside and outside the church, at both the 18:00 and 19:00 hour masses. After mass a long and large walk took place in the barrio of Guadalupe where the Virgin of Guadalupe's Image visited all streets of the Barrio in a 2 hour tour.
In the houses of other barrios you could catch a glimpse of the people gathering in their houses with all their families praying and chanting songs to Our Holy Mother.
The sense of tradition and peace all around was felt in a very special way all over town; something worth experiencing, if you ever visit Campeche at this time of year.

Beaches in Campeche - what the future MAY hold.

In addition to the resort being developed by the Spanish developer Grupo Mall, there are several ideas floating around in Campeche for smaller developments. During my recent trip I had several meetings with different parties about potential developments of different kinds, from a small gated project (about 8 homes and 6 apartments) on a beach in the outskirts of Campeche City to a larger gated community in the south near Cd del Carmen to developments with private villas on beachfront lots. This is what the future MAY hold. It takes time for these things to take shape, but I am confident some will and as soon as I know you will be able to learn more about them in www.campeche.ca www.campeche.co.uk

What I know for a fact has been happening is that some non-Mexicans (American and Europeans) have bought old Heritage Homes in Campeche City's historic downtown district. People are interested in these properties as retirement homes or potential tourism businesses like B&B's or restaurants. I think we'll continue to see this for the next three to five years.

Finally, I just want to reiterate what I tell clients I advise about purchasing property in Campeche (or Mexico for that matter). Whatever it is you wish to buy make sure that your offers are contingent to the TITLE being able to be insured by a company like Stewart Title Insurance. It is also recommended that you obtain legal advise from an attorney when purchasing property to add another level of peace of mind. Remember it is your money. Don't leave your brains at home.

Back from Campeche

I'm back in Toronto (minus 3 degrees Celsius at 9 am) from Campeche (+ 19 degrees Celsius at the moment - 8 am). It was mostly a business trip, but I did make a little time to visit some relatives and go to a Karaoke bar (Campecheans love to sing). I also lucked out a bit on Sunday. After dinner, I walked over to the Zócalo (Main Square)0 with a visitor from Ireland and my brother. We got there in time to listen to a couple of songs by the guitar group Romanza Campeche, who were performing for the local crowd. On Sundays, the local government closes off the area surrounding the square to vehicular traffic. Many vendors set up shop around the square and tables are set up so that people can eat out in the open. Outside the Library people play the traditional Campeche Lotería (a kind of bingo that uses cards that portray traditional characters). Families and couples mingle about in a safe and happy atmosphere that sends us back in time. December is extra special of course because the square and many parts of Campeche are illuminated with Holiday lights.

One comment reminder: when you visit Campeche it's best to carry US dollars. If you can, do exchange some at the airport in Mexico City or Merida so that you have pesos when you get there. Because Campeche is still very new as an international destination, there aren't enough tourists yet to justify setting up currency exchange houses (there's only one near the Land Gate, but it's often closed). You can exchange dollars at any bank, but if you do, get there early (9 am) because banks get quite busy in Campeche.

El Cigala and Armando Manzanero

El Cigala is the greatest Flamenco singer "cantaor" today. He will be in Campeche to perform in concert with the most successful Mexican composer in history, Mr. Armando Manzanero. The concert will take place at the Renacimiento theatre on Dec 15th.
